5 Tips to Create a Positive Morning Routine

At Upstate we instill our company values in all that we do and encourage our staff to apply the values to their work and personal lives. One of those values is to ’embody wellbeing’. A commitment to health and wellbeing underpins everything we do here at Upstate. We know just how important it is to establish a morning routine that helps us feel enthusiastic about the day ahead. When our agents are happy, healthy, and focussed, they’re better equipped to achieve the best outcomes for themselves, their team, and their clients.

The first series of decisions you make upon waking have a profound flow on effect throughout your day. That is to say: The way you start your morning matters.

“Win the morning, win the day”

The perspective shared by Tim Ferriss, an entrepreneur, investor, author, podcaster, and lifestyle guru, serves as an inspiring and empowering mindset to kick off each day.

Capitalising on early mornings is an ethos that CEOs, athletes, and a plethora of highly successful people swear by. Whether you’re an early riser or a habitual snoozer, creating a morning routine that promotes balance and discipline will help cultivate productive momentum for the day ahead.

Here are our five tips to help you create a morning ritual that gives each day structure and sets you up for success.

1 Avoid hitting snooze

Think of your alarm as the first commitment of your day. If you hit snooze, you are procrastinating on the very first task you had planned, which can trigger guilt, stress, and regret (especially if rolling over and falling back to sleep means you miss uncrowded waves, a fleeting, hot-pink sunrise, or a pilates class with your favourite instructor). Upon hearing your alarm, countdown from five and then get up – make this a non-negotiable.

2 Ditch the morning scroll

It’s almost second nature to start the day by checking Instagram, emails, and the news – often with one eye open, still comfortably under the covers. More than a huge time waster, picking up your phone and overstimulating your brain from the very first moment you wake up can wreak havoc on your concentration and ability to focus throughout the day. Leave your phone in another room and invest in an old school alarm clock to make breaking this habit a total cinch.

3 Move your body

Whether you have ten minutes for a living room stretch, half an hour for a surf, or enough time for a 10km run, moving your body first thing in the morning will do wonders for your physical and mental health. Early morning movement unlocks a burst of energy and has a positive impact on mental clarity and focus which is conducive to productivity.

To encourage a commitment to movement and help each employee at Upstate find a style of exercise they enjoy, we partner with a handful of local fitness studios on the Northern Beaches. The team visit KX Dee Why for weekly pilates classes, frequently break a sweat at LA Nation Brookvale, recover and test their physical and mental endurance at Rigs Brookvale, and regularly take part in corporate golf competitions and fun runs. By prioritising movement, the team is able to unlock optimal performance both physically and mentally.

4 Get outside

With early sunrises, warm weather, and an endless stretch of idyllic coastline here on the Northern Beaches, there’s no better place to start the day than outdoors. Aside from enjoying all nature has to offer, a long walk or quiet moment outside is the perfect time to listen to a guided meditation or an inspiring, educational podcast such as the Huberman Lab.

Moreover, exposing yourself to morning sunlight will help regulate your body’s circadian rhythm so that you feel awake and energised to start the day. Over time, this habit will also make falling asleep each night easier.

5 Eat the frog

In the morning, our brains are at peak performance in terms of speed and accuracy, making the start of the day the perfect window of time to eat the frog. A productivity hack, to eat the frog means to tackle the hardest, or most important task on your list first. Doing so will help you gain momentum early on and eliminate unnecessary procrastination.

At  Upstate, the team enjoy a myriad of benefits aimed at ensuring staff prioritise their wellbeing. These include long lunch breaks, weekly fitness sessions, discounts on gym memberships, and ongoing training and development opportunities.
